Don’t go in Winter you could die. It is ridiculously cold. But Summer, Spring, Autumn its amazing. Springtime Stanthorpe comes alive with an amazing wildflower display. Summer is warmer and autumn is crisp and delightful.
Stanthorpe is great for vineyard hopping, beautiful scenery and great for a romantic getaway – lots of little cottage style accommodation with fireplaces and wrought iron bed heads – you get the idea.
For all the closet geologists there are lots of interesting granite formations – after all it’s in what is knows as the granite belt of Queensland.
There is also plenty of beautiful hikes and freshwater pools and streams to relax next to. The national park is known as Giraween and there are at least a dozen different trails to choose from. For information and park alerts see http://nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/girraween/about.html
We stayed at Granite Gardens Luxury Cottages and it was absolutely lovely. Free bottle of wine and fresh baked bread on arrival plus a brekky pack with bacon and eggs. Great fireplace and spa bath in the little cottage. Highly recommended! http://www.granitegardens.com.au/stanthorpe.htm
We walked the Bald Rock Creek circuit and climbed the pyramid. There is an interesting balancing rock on this walk. A huge boulder perched high on the mountain balancing on an eroded point.
It takes about 3 hours from the Gold Coast and only 2 ½ hours from Brisbane so a perfect weekend getaway.
