Ellery big hole is a big hole. No surprises there.
It’s actually a giant water hole carved out of a rugged pass of the west MacDonnell range.
Can you swim there?
Technically yes. I went in winter and it was hypothermically cold. I don’t know if that’s a word but if it’s not it should be.
As in the ellery big hole water temperature is hypothermically cold.
In Summer it might be ok but I have heard that even then it is quite chilly.
There is a reasonable walk you can do here, the 3km dolomite walk but the real attraction is the swimming hole. Its a great place for a picnic or you can just sit and read a book and relax. The colour of the water changes depending on the time of day and the angle of the sun over the range. You get fiery reds to bright golds and every shade in between.
There is a pleasant campsite here with gas BBQs and toilets and some great fire pits where open fires are allowed.
It’s quite popular so don’t expect any solitude here but it can be an enjoyable social experience sitting around one of the communal fire pits swapping stories with other travellers.
All in all a beautiful spot to visit.
