Its got a great swimming hole, challenging trail to get your heart rate up and a very relaxed camping area right by the creek.
The trail head is off the lower portal carpark which is just under two hours drive from the Gold Coast and even less from Brisbane
There is a marked trail from the car park which can be tough in the heat with some reasonably steep sections so take plenty of water in Summer! It takes about an hour and a half to get to the lower portals. There are a couple of babbling creek crossings as you work your way through some nice bush dominated by the ubiquitous black boys.
Once you get to the main creek you will see a sign directing you to the lower portals on the left. The camp ground is a a couple of hundred metres to the right. The swimming hole here is great.Make sure you crawl up and over the rocks to the right hand side to get to the bigger swimming hole. You can simply chill out here and have some lunch and relax then head back making it a great day trip.
However we camped the night and then set off the next morning for the junction camp ground. To get there head up to the right up to the ridge where the old lower portals camp ground is signed. This is a steep climb and will get your heart rate going. The track is well trodden and eventually you will hit a fork in a clearing. One trail heads up hill while the trails downhill leads you to the campground. It is a reasonably steep descent.
This is a great camp spot by the creek and a good spot for a swim and some eel watching.
You can do some rock hopping up or down the creek with each bend in the creek providing a different vista.
We then packed up the next morning, hiked back to the lower portals for a swim and lunch and then back to the carpark by the afternoon.
An enjoyable couple of days!
